Inciweb– Red flag conditions on August 22 led to rapid fire growth across Jackson Lake and Highway 89. The highway remains closed at Leeks Marina (south) and the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park (north). The road will be reopened when fire danger is reduced and hazardous trees are removed. Flagg Ranch Campground and Headwaters Lodge were evacuated on the morning of August 23, due to potential for continued fire growth to the north. The fire is now established across both sides of Highway 89 and burning to the northeast in Bridger-Teton National Forest.

Management of the fire in now under the command of Great Basin Incident Management Team 4 under the direction of Incident Commander Tim Roide.

The Berry Fire is being managed to protect people and property, enhance the area’s natural resources where appropriate, and safely and effectively utilize firefighting resources. The fire will be monitored and management actions will be implemented in advance of any potential impact on values at risk. Trail closures remain in effect near the fire area.

Smoke from the fire may be visible along roadways in the northern portion of the park, especially from the east side road along Jackson Lake and US Highways 89/191/287. During evening and morning hours, smoke may be present along park roadways. Drivers should use caution when smoke is present on park roadways. Please use headlights and slow your speed.

Fuels Involved Timber, with short grass and brush. Movement in the mature mixed conifer stands are primarily terrain driven. Fairly complete consumption of heavy downed fuels.
Significant Events Moderate fire behavior with creeping, flanking and single and group tree torching.

Outlook

Planned Actions Continue point protection measures in Flagg Ranch, Sheffield and Lizard Campgrounds, Huckleberry Lookout, Lower Berry Cabin and the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Continue to access and implement suppression efforts along Highway 89/191/287.
Projected Incident Activity Fire spread on the west side of Jackson Lake north of Dave Adams Hill slowly moving towards Glade Creek.
Remarks The fire is now being managed by Great Basin Incident Management Team 4 (Type 2) under the command Of Incident Commander Tim Roide.
